After the Vietnamese lunar new year, I don\u2019t know who actually pulled the trigger first but amid this turbulent Western \u2013 Vietnamese event with #HubertFake, once again: It\u2019s the art of Vietnam that suffers the most.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3368\" style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3368\" src=\"https:\/\/art.qweb.com.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/oo2.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artnation.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/oo2.webp 662w, https:\/\/artnation.vn\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/oo2-300x180.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: painting \u201cThe Young Beggar\u201d by Bartolome Esteban Murillo. In the exhibition \u201cPaintings Returned From Europe\u201d at Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, Mr Vu Xuan Chung\u2019s collection including 17 paintings from Vietnamese legendary quartet Nghiem \u2013 Lien \u2013 Sang \u2013 Phai (Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Duong Bich Lien, Nguyen Sang, Bui Xuan Phai) and other famous artist from Indochina College of Fine Arts (l\u2019\u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts d\u2019Indochine) such as Nguyen Tien Chung, Nguyen Sy Ngoc, Ta Ty happily presented to the public.<\/p>\n<p>However, in contrast to expectations about an event with happiness and joy, from the opening ceremony onward, the works were considered by experts to be\u2026all fake! Then on July 19, Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts held an evaluation session with managers, art critics and art specialists to clarify the case. In the end, Mr. Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert, a senior expert in Vietnamese and Asian art at Christie\u2019s Hong Kong, was reportedly the seller of 17 of these works, according to Mr. Vu Xuan Chung. It\u2019s also Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert who issued the certificate for these 17 paintings. Then, when the case became more and more known, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert still asserted: <em>\u201cAll paintings at the exhibition \u201cPaintings returned from Europe\u201d are real paintings\u201d<\/em>. Ho Chi Minh City) of Mr. Vu Xuan Chung\u2019s collection\u00a0 are not author-made artworks (i.e., fake paintings). With the same collection, two paintings were impersonated the signatures of artists Ta Ty and Sy Ngoc. After then, I\u2019m not sure what exactly happened, but things have since cooled down. There was nothing left but melancholy and a dubious glance at Vietnamese paintings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August 8, 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is when the article entitled \u201cThe academic personality of Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert or \u201cThe parrot from the West\u201d by Curator Ace Le aired. A little more in-depth, Ace Le holds a Master\u2019s degree in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practice at Nanyang Technological University. He is the co-founder of the independent curatorial group \u201cOf Limits\u201d, winner of NTU CCA Singapore\u2019s 2020 Platform Projects. This event demonstrates how the world is progressively becoming more aware of the context of Vietnamese fine art in general and Indochina painting in particular. Once again, Academic problems, art history study projects, and forgery are brought into consideration. Ace Le\u2019s views about \u201cextreme negligence\u201d in articles on Hubert\u2019s own website, with a total of 8 cases.<\/p>\n<p>The original text of Curator Ace Le\u2019s essay will not be published within the context of this compilation; instead, it is merely briefly summarized, with each item\u2019s title taken directly from the article:<\/p>\n<p><em>The folk game \u201csalix\u201d and \u201cthe swell\u201d of Vu Cao Dam?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Referencing Hubert\u2019s fake, incorrect, and illogical information when discussing the Vu Cao Dam painting \u201cLe Th\u00e9\u201d (ca. 1930).<\/p>\n<p><em>Were there only three paintings with hand writing poems by Nguyen Phan Chanh?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hubert believes that Nguyen Phan Chanh rarely alludes to poetry in his works; however, this is untrue and is really a ruse to make his works appear more unusual.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTea and cake box\u201d in Le Pho\u2019s painting?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hurbert mistakenly believes that the woman is holding a box of tea and cakes in Le Pho\u2019s 1938 painting La Femme au panier, but in reality, she is clutching votive paper.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Lu\u2019s \u201ceagerness\u201d and Cao Ba Nha\u2019s \u201cgratitude\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hurbert frequently used The Lu and Cao Ba Nha\u2019s poetry to demonstrate the works of Le Pho, but in actuality, their juxtaposition is quite misleading and they are not at all related.<\/p>\n<p><em>The origin of Vietnamese cotton weaving and dyeing can be traced back to its ancestor Hoang Tao P\u2019o.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the essay about Le Pho\u2019s painting \u201cLes Teinturi\u00e8res\u201d (c. 1945), Hubert claims about a specific ancestor of weaving and dyeing, but no one in Vietnam knows who she is.<\/p>\n<p><em>Parrot from the West?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once more, Hubert explains the image\u2019s content inexplicably, subjectively, and without sufficient expertise.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ranking of artists from Indochina College of Fine Arts?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to four criteria, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert himself created a rating of Vietnamese painters. The irony is that the definition of \u201cethical heirs\u201d is included. The article has a long title: \u201cThe good man, the bad man and the ugly\u201d Or a compromise of the soul with the instinct: a 2023 point of view on the vietnamese painting. It was translated into Vietnamese by Thuc Doan.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Mr. Hubert published this article on his personal website on March 7 but only when the Vietnamese version appeared on social networks with ads running as propaganda effort, everything just exploded, and insiders couldn\u2019t ignore it anymore. In which, according to Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert, three individuals stand out: artist Thanh Chuong (a failed pseudo-artist posing as Ta Ty \u2013 Hubert), researcher Kevin Vuong (who was employed to run errands \u2013 Hubert), and curator Ace Le (head of the network \u2013 Hubert). There are claims that the 1993 book Painter of the Indochina School of Fine Arts by artists Nguyen Quang Phong, Nguyen Quang Viet, and Le Thanh Duc contains \u201cnonsense mixed language\u201d and is \u201ccontrary to historical knowledge\u201d. The fact is she, herself, used to be assistant to a travel agency, but still claims that she is \u201can independent advisor with expertise in the development of private Vietnamese art collections, offering curatorial, consultancy and market intelligence services for art collectors, buyers and consignors\u2026\u201d (Thuc Doan\u2019s biography on her website showed as in comment section)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[\u2026.]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Thus, utilizing a domestic gallery (Boi Tran Garden) and a successor (Thuc Doan), Jean Francois Hubert still aspires to \u201cwhiten all his mistakes and weaknesses, and nurture the next generation\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Immediately, after this statement by Do Viet Tuan, Tran Dinh Thuc Doan decided to\u00a0 remove the post pinned to the top of her facebook account. She locked all comments but still left the article posted. Meanwhile other mentioned people remain silent, curator Ace Le spoke briefly, saying, \u201c<em>Please be informed that the accusations made against me in Jean Francois Hubert\u2019s article are ludicrous and baseless. In this post, he describes details about the characters in the system, starting with Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Hubert as the head, followed by Mrs. Boi Tran (Boi Tran Garden, Hue), Le Minh Chau (Boi Tran\u2019s son), Tran Dinh Thuc Doan (Boi Tran\u2019s niece), Wang Zineng (Hubert\u2019s alleged partner who assisted him in certifying 17 fake paintings in 2016), and Bao Nam (Hubert\u2019s partner).
